Steps To Health

Achieving and keeping a healthy mouth is a joint effort

We have developed a staged approach for our patients to achieve and maintain healthy stable gums. Poor gum health can lead to the supporting bone around teeth being lost, this can lead to:

  • Wobbly teeth
  • Need for extractions
  • Pain due to movement
  • Infection
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Poor appearance
  • Gum recession
  • Bad Breath
  • Death of the nerve system in a tooth Inability to place implants due to lack of bone Linked to multiple health issues including – heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s.

Better tooth brushing needed

The gum pocket around the tooth is under 3.5mm in depth. This is good as there are no areas which can’t be cleaned thoroughly with home
techniques.

There is bleeding when we examine some areas – this is inflammation caused by bacteria causing gingivitis.

Individual risk category:

High Risk – Significant bacterial deposits and scale; there is a high risk of the situation developing further leading to periodontitis (the loss of bone around the tooth and meaning less tooth support)

Moderate Risk – Deposits of scale and bacteria present a moderate number of bleeding areas; there is a moderate risk of developing periodontitis.

Low Risk – Minimal deposits of bacteria and scale; there is a low chance of developing periodontitis

Gingivitis does not affect the attachment of the tooth to the bone. Plaque is the starting point of scale developing and development of periodontitis which is the loss of bone attachment to the tooth.

Treatment needed to move to category A and better health

  • Extended hygiene assessment-Oral Health markers are taken to assess your personal area of need.
  • Photographs are taken to record these markers and illustrate where treatment is required.
  • Design a bespoke protocol for hygiene regime -techniques for a collaborative approach for maintaining excellent oral health.
  • Thorough hygiene treatment -with removal of bacteria above and below the gum
  • Review at a 3-month interval if high risk or if thought necessary by the hygienist or dentist.
  • Tailor a recall schedule for individuals to maintain oral health

Causing damage

The gum pocket is over 3.5mm but less than 5.5mm in depth in one area. This is a problem as your home hygiene is unable to effectively clean the whole area.

The bone is dissolving away from the tooth.

There is bleeding when we examine the areas – this is inflammation as a result of bacteria causing gingivitis and now leading to periodontitis.

Treatment needed to move to category A and better health

  • Extended hygiene assessment (45 mins)- Oral Health markers are taken to assess your personal area of need.
  • Up to date X-rays to assess current bone levels
  • Photographs are taken to record these markers and illustrate where treatment is required.
  • Design a bespoke protocol for hygiene regime – techniques for a collaborative approach to maintaining excellent oral health
  • Thorough hygiene session (45 mins) for superficial and deep cleaning removing bacteria away above and below the gum (with anaesthetic if required).
  • Removal / adjustment of any problematic dental fillings if making cleaning difficult.
  • Further hygiene sessions depending on the number of areas in need.
  • Review at a 3-month interval and assess the previous hygiene markers to evaluate what progress has been made.
  • Tailor a recall schedule for individuals to maintain oral health.

Damaged and getting worse

The gum pocket is over 5.5mm in depth in at least one area. This is a problem as your home hygiene is not able to clean effectively the whole area.
More bone is being dissolved away from the tooth without professional help this will only get worse.

  • There is bleeding when we examine the areas indicating active disease – this is inflammation as a result of bacteria causing periodontitis.
  • Sometimes there is pus coming out around the tooth.
  • Teeth may be loose.
  • Extended hygiene assessment (45 mins) – Oral Health markers are taken to assess your personal area of need.
  • Up to date X-rays to assess current bone levels
  • Photographs are taken to record these markers and illustrate where focus on treatment is required.
  • Design a bespoke protocol for hygiene regime – techniques for a collaborative approach to maintaining excellent oral health and keeping your teeth
  • Thorough hygiene session (45 mins) for superficial and deep cleaning removing bacteria away above and below the gum (with anaesthetic if required).
  • Use of specialised gum medicines
  • Removal / adjustment of any problematic dental fillings preventing good cleaning.
  • Further hygiene sessions depending on the number of areas in need
  • Review at a 3-month interval and assess the previous hygiene markers and evaluate your progress.
  • Tailor a recall schedule for individuals to maintain oral health. If necessary referral to a dental specialist in gum treatments.
