Children's Orthodontics in Bristol
Straight, healthy teeth start with the right advice at the right time. Our orthodontist, Dr Jay Wilson, sees children and teenagers for orthodontic assessments here in Stoke Bishop, and the first consultation is free. If it is too early to start treatment, we will tell you, and keep an eye on things until the time is right.

When should my child
see an orthodontist?
There is no single right age. Many orthodontic problems are easiest to judge once most of the adult teeth have come through, which for most children is somewhere around 11 to 13. Some problems are better spotted earlier, though, so it is worth booking sooner if you notice any of these.
Teeth that are very crowded, or adult teeth coming through behind baby teeth. Top front teeth that stick out a long way. Teeth that do not meet when your child bites together, or a bite that looks crooked. Baby teeth lost very early or very late. A thumb or finger sucking habit that has carried on after the adult teeth start to arrive.
If you are unsure, book in anyway. There is no obligation to go ahead with anything.

Treatment options
for children
The right treatment depends on the problem and on your child's age.
Fixed braces are the most common treatment for children and teenagers. They can correct a wide range of problems, and modern brackets are much smaller and more comfortable than they used to be. Children can choose clear or coloured elastics.
Invisalign® Teen uses clear, removable aligners designed for teenagers, with wear indicators that show whether they are being worn enough. They suit many teenagers who would rather not have fixed braces, but they only work if they are worn for most of the day.
After treatment, retainers keep the teeth in their new position. Wearing them as advised matters as much as the treatment itself.

Questions parents ask
Is the first consultation really free?
Yes. Our orthodontic consultation is free and there is no obligation to go ahead with treatment. Book a free consultation.
Do we need a referral from our dentist?
No. You can book directly with us. If your child's dentist has suggested an assessment, let us know when you book.
How long does treatment take?
It depends on the problem. Many courses of fixed braces take between 6 and 18 months, and we will give you an estimate for your child at the consultation.
Will braces hurt?
Teeth often feel tender for a few days after braces are fitted or adjusted. The pain relief your child would normally take and soft food for a day or two usually help.
Can we spread the cost?
Interest-free payment plans are available, and our plan membership covers children as well as adults.
Which treatment is right for my child?
That depends on the problem, your child's age and how they feel about each option. Read more about fixed braces and Invisalign® for teens, or read our tips on keeping teeth clean with braces.
